I am a human being struggling to be less alone in a violent and indifferent world. I write letters to other human beings and send my dreams and projects, hoping to reach someone out there, hoping that someone will answer. There is no life without hope.

May 1975 • Henry Geldzahler - to my studio in New York at 414 East 75th

Henry Geldzahler, the curator of Twentieth Century Art of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, wrote me a letter on Feb 14th, 1975 to let me know that: “while he did not envisage showing my work at the Met soon, he was interested to see what I was doing and would have liked to visit my studio in April or May at our mutual convenience”.

The marquis Giorgi and his wife Gabriella were collectors of some of my sculptures: “Bathers” and “Dancers”, lost wax castings of my figurative period 1950 – 1966. He was the president of Phillip Morris for Italy.

Phillips Collection • June 1 - September 15, 1974

My dear friends Eugenia and Charles Zadoc invited me to a friendly meeting in their New York apartment filled with beautiful works of Art by Matisse, Cezanne and many of the Impressionists. Some of the furnitures were by the brother of Giacometti. This meeting was attended by many curators and directors of various museums. My First Studio • Rome Via Margutta • First Exhibits in America and others

In the sixties, approximately 40 years ago, after two very successful exhibits in New York and Palm Beach, Florida, I returned to Rome and I was able to afford renting a studio in via Margutta, in the courtyard of Palazzo Patrizi. Until then, I had worked in every corner of my home, which was on the third floor of the same Palazzo, overlooking Villa Borghese.

AMERICA

I was married to my first husband Leonard Barton Herrmann,(called Peter)in 1947, in spring of 1948 aged 20, I went to New York with Peter, to meet his parents. In those days, it was a long trip of approximately 15 hours ; the airplane made several stops for fuel, I remember: in Switzerland, Shannon, Gander etc. I had obtained the Visa at the US Embassy in Rome, as the wife of Peter, an American citizen.
